# Bank statement in Spanish: the terms, and how to translate one

A bank statement in Spanish is an estado de cuenta, often estado de cuenta bancario, and in Spain also an extracto bancario. LoreAI translates one in either direction from a PDF or photo and returns an editable Word file with the transaction table, dates and amounts in place. For USCIS, a statement in Spanish needs a full English translation and the translator's certification[1].

## Spanish words on a bank statement

Banks in Mexico, Spain and the rest of Latin America use slightly different words for the same lines. These are the ones you will meet most often, with the English a translator would use.

*Bank statement terms, Spanish to English*

| Spanish | English |
| --- | --- |
| Estado de cuenta, extracto bancario | Account statement, bank statement |
| Titular, cotitular | Account holder, joint account holder |
| Número de cuenta, CLABE, IBAN | Account number; CLABE and IBAN copied as written |
| Periodo, fecha de corte | Statement period, closing date |
| Saldo anterior, saldo inicial | Previous balance, opening balance |
| Saldo final, saldo al corte | Closing balance |
| Saldo promedio | Average balance |
| Depósitos, abonos | Deposits, credits |
| Retiros, cargos | Withdrawals, debits |
| Comisiones, intereses | Fees, interest |
| Concepto, descripción, referencia | Description, reference |
| Transferencia SPEI, domiciliación | SPEI transfer, direct debit |
| Sucursal | Branch |

Keep every amount exactly as printed and name the currency once, for example MXN or EUR. Spain writes 1.250,75 where a US bank writes 1,250.75, so a translator who changes the separators risks changing the number. LoreAI keeps amounts, dates and account numbers as written.

## Spanish bank statements for USCIS

Bank statements are common evidence in marriage cases. The I-751 instructions list financial records such as joint savings and checking accounts with transaction history as evidence that a marriage is real[2]. On the I-864 affidavit of support, the intending immigrant's assets can count wherever they live, and they must be backed by evidence[3].

A statement from a bank in Mexico or Spain is in Spanish, so it needs a full English translation[1]. The translator certifies that it is complete and accurate and that they are competent to translate, and the certification includes their signature, printed name, the date and their contact information[2].

## English bank statements for a Spain visa

The direction can also run the other way. For the non-lucrative residence visa, the Spanish consulate in Los Angeles asks for bank statements from the last three months and a copy of the last tax return. Its page, dated February 11, 2026, says foreign financial documents need legalization or an apostille and an official translation into Spanish[4].

Each consulate publishes its own list, so read the page for the consulate that covers your address before you order anything. If it asks for an official translation, ask whether a translation by a sworn translator (traductor jurado) is what it means. LoreAI is not a sworn translator, and the [sworn translation guide](https://www.loreai.org/sworn-translation) explains how to find one.

## How to translate a bank statement with LoreAI

1. **Download the statement as a PDF.** A PDF from online banking, a scan or a phone photo of a paper statement all work.
2. **Upload it and choose the target language.** Pick English for a Spanish statement, or Spanish for an English one. LoreAI detects the source language.
3. **Download the Word file.** The transaction list comes back as a real Word table, with dates, descriptions and amounts in their columns and the bank's header and stamps in place.
4. **Add the certification if the receiver needs one.** For USCIS, the person who checks the translation signs the statement. The [certificate of translation template](https://www.loreai.org/certificate-of-translation-template) has the wording.

Free covers 3 pages, Basic up to 30 pages per document and Pro up to 100 pages.
