How to turn a handwritten PDF into text
- Choose the PDF. A scan from a copier, a phone scanner app or a PDF someone emailed you, up to 5 MB. The free tool reads page 1.
- Press the convert button. The handwriting OCR reads the page and types it out after a few seconds, with no account.
- Download Word or .txt. Open the Word file to edit the text, or copy it straight from the page.
Why you cannot copy text from a handwritten PDF
A scanned PDF holds a picture of each page. When you try to select the handwriting, your PDF reader finds no letters, only an image, so copy and paste gives you nothing. Search finds nothing either.
Optical character recognition (OCR) fixes that. It reads the shapes of the letters and writes them out as text. Handwriting needs an OCR model trained on handwriting, because every person joins and shapes letters differently. LoreAI reads clear handwriting and cursive in the Latin alphabet, the script of English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and most European languages.

A PDF of many handwritten pages
The free tool reads page 1 of a PDF. For the whole file, upload it to the LoreAI app. It reads each page in order and returns one Word document, so a scanned notebook becomes one file you can search from start to end. Your first document is free, up to 3 pages and 3 MB, and Basic covers 200 pages a month for $12.99.
The app can also translate. A handwritten letter in Spanish, Italian or German comes back as an editable English Word file, or in any of 105 languages, with the language detected by itself.
Free ways to convert a handwritten PDF
| Option | What it takes | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Google Drive, Open with Google Docs | PDFs and .jpeg, .png or .gif files of 2 MB or smaller[1] | A Google Doc. Google says lists, tables, columns and footnotes are not likely to be detected[1] |
| LoreAI handwritten PDF to text | A PDF or photo up to 5 MB, page 1 read for free | Typed text, a .txt file or a Word file with lists and tables |
| LoreAI app | A whole PDF of up to 3 pages on the free document | One Word file, typed out or translated into 105 languages |
Google's page about its converter does not mention handwriting[1]. It asks for text at least 10 pixels high[1], which a phone scan of a notebook page usually meets.
Getting a clean scan
- Scan at the normal or high quality setting of your scanner app, in color or grayscale.
- Press notebook pages flat so the lines near the spine are not curved.
- Keep pencil notes in good light, because pencil is fainter than ink.
- Rotate pages upright before you save the PDF.
