Translation or International Driving Permit?
An International Driving Permit (IDP) has to come from the country that issued your license. USA.gov says the US does not issue IDPs to foreign visitors, not every state requires one, and you may need both your license and an IDP to rent a car.
Some DMVs set their own translation rule. New York, for example, asks for an IDP or a translation certified by a consulate, the US Department of State or another government agency at the road test. A LoreAI translation does not meet a rule like that. Check with the office that asked.
A LoreAI translation is a translation of your card. It is not an IDP and does not give you permission to drive.
What to include
- Holder
- Name exactly as written, date and place of birth, address if shown.
- License details
- License number, issue and expiry dates, issuing authority.
- Categories
- Vehicle classes with their codes and dates, for example B or A2. Keep the codes and translate the descriptions.
- Restrictions
- Codes such as glasses required, translated with the code kept.
- Security features
- Photo, signature, hologram and seals, described in brackets.
How to translate a license with LoreAI
- Photograph the front and back of the card on a dark, flat surface. Avoid glare on the hologram.
- Put both photos into one PDF, so the license counts as one document.
- Choose English as the target language and download the Word file.
- Check every code, number and date against the card.
In the example above, LoreAI kept the license number, dates and category codes as printed and translated the descriptions next to them. The photo comes through as the word PHOTO, which is what a translation should say.
Questions people ask
Will a DMV accept this translation?
Each state DMV sets its own rules, and some want a translation from a specific source such as a consulate or a government agency. Ask the DMV office first.
Can I drive in the US with a translation alone?
A translation is not a license. Driving rules for visitors are set by each state. Check the state's DMV before you drive.
Does LoreAI keep the license codes?
Yes. Codes, numbers and dates stay as printed, and the descriptions next to them are translated.
