How to edit a scanned PDF with LoreAI
- Choose the scanned PDF. The box above reads page 1 of a PDF up to 5 MB. A phone photo of the page works too, as JPG, PNG, WEBP or HEIC.
- Press the convert button. OCR reads the page and writes the text into a Word file, with headings, lists and tables where they are on the scan.
- Edit the text in Word. Change names, dates, amounts or whole paragraphs the way you edit any Word document.
- Save it as a PDF again. In Word choose File, Save As and pick PDF, and you have an edited PDF with real text in it.
Why can't I edit my scanned PDF?
A scanner or a phone saves each page as an image inside the PDF. You see words, but the file holds pixels. That is why the text tool in a PDF editor selects nothing, and why search finds nothing.
Opening the PDF in Word does not always help. Microsoft says that if a PDF contains mostly charts or other graphics, the whole page might show up as an image, and then the text can't be edited[1]. OCR, optical character recognition, is the step that turns the picture of each letter back into a letter you can change. Read what an OCR PDF is for the background.
Three ways to edit a scanned PDF
| Option | What it does | What you edit in the end |
|---|---|---|
| Preview on a Mac, File, Export, Embed Text | Recognizes the text in an image based PDF and embeds it, so it can be selected in any PDF viewer[2] | Text you can select and copy. The page itself stays a picture |
| Google Drive, Open with Google Docs | Converts a PDF of 2 MB or smaller into a Google Doc. Lists, tables and columns are not likely to be detected[3] | A Google Doc |
| Word, File, Open | Microsoft suggests scanning to PDF and opening it in Word, which tries to import the text[4] | A Word file, as close to the PDF as Word manages[4] |
| LoreAI | Reads the scan with OCR and rebuilds headings, lists and tables. Page 1 free with no account, every page in the app | An editable Word file |
A searchable PDF is enough when you only need to copy a sentence or find a word. When you need to change the content, retype a table or reuse the text, a Word file saves you the most work.
Which scanned documents can you edit this way?
- Contracts and letters
- Paragraphs come back as paragraphs, ready to change and send
- Forms and applications
- Printed labels and filled in answers come back in reading order
- Invoices and statements
- Tables of dates and amounts come back as Word tables, numbers as printed
- Certificates and records
- Stamps and seals stay in place where they sit on the original
- Handwritten notes on the page
- Read along with the printed text
Edit a scanned PDF of many pages
The free box reads one page. For the whole file, upload it to the LoreAI app, which reads every page with OCR and returns one Word file in the original order. Your first document is free, up to 3 pages and 3 MB.
If the scan is in another language, the app can translate it into one of 105 languages in the same step, so you edit an English Word file instead of a German or Spanish scan. See how to translate a scanned PDF.
Questions people ask
Can I edit a scanned PDF for free?
How do I edit text in a scanned PDF?
Run OCR first so the picture becomes text. Then edit the text in Word and save it as a PDF again.
Why does my PDF editor say the text is not editable?
Because the page is an image. A scanner saves a picture of the page, and an editor can only change text that is stored as text.
Will the edited file look like the original?
The Word file keeps the headings, lists and tables of the scan in the original order, so the layout stays recognizable and the content is yours to change.
